Bromsgrove Sporting 0 vs 2 Bolehall Swifts - Match Report

Table toppers Bolehall Swift extend their good start to the season with a 2-0 win at the Victoria Ground against a Bromsgrove Sporting side coming off the back of an 8-0 win after their FA Vase triumph last Saturday.

Bolehall created the first chance of the game, inside the opening ten minutes when Chris Sturridge-Parker attempted to chip, Sporting keeper Jake Bedford from just outside the box, though his effort was high of the target.

Sturridge-Parker had an opportunity to better his previous long range effort in the 19th minute. Bedford rushed out of his box to clear a long ball from Bolehall, his headed clearance fell straight to the feet of Sturridge-Parker who struck the ball into an empty net from around the 25 yard mark from goal, giving Bolehall an early lead.

Possession was equal in the first half and despite some good attacking play from Sporting they didn’t create any threatening attempts during the first half. After the visitors got their goal inside the first twenty minutes, they also didn’t push for a second before the half time break.

Bromsgrove Sporting emerged a better side after half time, a team that looked like they could get that equaliser. Winger Will Tibbetts latched on to a fantastic low cross, whipped in from the near touchline, but his touch took the ball over the crossbar.

Ricardo Richards, who like Will Tibbetts got a hat-trick last weekend for Bromsgrove, had a great chance to get an equaliser for the Rouslers, eight minutes from the re-start. A high diagonal ball out from the wing found Richards who brought the ball down inside the box, though effort should have been better with his shot both high and wide of the goal.

Despite Bolehall looking the weaker side in the second half they was able to capitalize on the two missed chances from Sporting, and extend their lead. Bromsgrove’s defence switched off for a brief moment allowing a through ball to put Bolehall’s Dave Yonwin clean through on goal, he then calmly slide the ball under Bedford to give the away side a 2-0 lead.

Sporting didn’t let their heads drop and still produced some good attacking play in the final stages of the match. Ricardo Richards was unlucky to have not been awarded a penalty when he was pushed over in the box, but referee Matthew Perry waved play on.

Bromsgrove’s finishing was far from what we saw last week against Stafford, the aerial threat they have wasn’t utilised at all in this game.

Sporting substitute, Snape had the final effort of the game, he wriggled through a few tackles and found room to shoot at goal, but his shot was hit straight at Bolehall keeper, McNulty.

The game finished 0-2 to Bolehall with the match being fairly even, neither side created many chances and possession was split equally. Bolehall made the most of the few chances they had and had Sporting done the same then both sides could have easily left with a point each. This result ends a four game unbeaten run in the league for Sporting, but if they want to challenge for promotion this season then they need to get back to winning ways next Saturday when the play Pelsall Villa away.

Kings Of Leon- Mechanical Bull Album Review

Over the past couple of years, it hasn’t looked like that much fun being in Kings Of Leon. The incident-ridden plagued that accompanied their last album, 2010’s under-performing ‘Come Around Sundown’, felt like a miserable and clichéd final chapter for a band that, you suspected, were struggling to cope with the gigantic success that had been thrust upon them and, though the people that cried “sell out” after ‘Sex On Fire’ and ‘Use Somebody’ were being too harsh, it was clear that something special had been lost on their journey from bars to arenas. Nevertheless, they return after a short hiatus with their sixth album, ‘Mechanical Bull’. Early whispers surrounding the record have suggested that the band have returned to the rough and ready sound that made their first few albums such a joy to listen to, but can they deliver on this promise?

Initially, ‘Mechanical Bull’ feels like their second coming. Lead single ‘Supersoaker’ is fantastic, taking the thrilling southern rock of their past and reinventing it to fit with their current stadium style to great effect, with Caleb Followill’s proving that his vocals still have the power to blow people away. ‘Rock City’ is a boozy mid-tempo track that seems custom built to soundtrack bar room brawls, while ‘Don’t Matter’ is a Queens Of The Stone Age track if they grew up by the Nashville swamp instead of the California desert. They save their best for ‘Temple’, which is easily the best song they’ve recorded since ‘Only By The Night’ took them to the big time. Boasting riffs that feel like they’ve jumped straight from a classic Bruce Springsteen song and a chorus that won’t leave your head for days, it’s the perfect example of what Kings Of Leon do best.

Unfortunately, the band can’t keep up their early momentum. ‘Wait For Me’ aims for epic but just feels uninspired and hollow. Similarly, the majority of the quieter tracks on the album feel like a little bit of a chore to get through, with ‘On The Chin’ in particular sounding too middle of the road for it’s own good. Kings Of Leon have usually excelled at slowing the tempo down and still being brilliant, but here, these songs simply weigh the album down. The almost laughably cheesy lyrics that accompany ‘Comeback Story’ seem to prove that their old spark won’t be making a full return anytime time soon.

Maybe it was unfair to expect so much from ‘Mechanical Bull’. After all, Kings Of Leon have been in ‘stadium mode’ for five years, longer than they spent in their supposed ‘classic period’ (between 2003’s ‘Youth And Young Manhood’ and 2007’s ‘Because Of The Times’) and, after multiple marriages and births within the band since then, they’re vastly different people from that time, but even with its strong opening tracks, ‘Mechanical Bull’ doesn’t quite live up to the massive expectations surrounding it.

Verdict: While there are moments of their old brilliance on ‘Mechanical Bull,’ the first part of the title of Kings Of Leon’s sixth album might be a little bit too apt, with much of it’s second half feeling slightly soulless. Its best moments are worth treasuring, but aren’t enough push it from ‘good’ to ‘great’.

Premier League Preview September 28th - 30th

Tottenham vs Chelsea

Tottenham will go into this one with all guns blazing after their 0-4 win at Villa Park in the cup on Tuesday. They have utilised their squad tremendously winning every game since losing to Arsenal.

There is a mood in the Tottenham camp where they feel like they can really achieve something this season. The sale of Gareth Bale has seemed to allow Spurs to find a collective of quality signings and this fixture will be pivotal for them to gather early season momentum on in their title push.

Chelsea recovered from a horrible week a fortnight ago with two wins this past week and they will be hoping to continue that run at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Fernando Torres played well at Swindon in the cup in mid-week and it will be interesting to see whether or not he will get a start on Saturday.

Chelsea sit in 4th place in the Premier league heading into this game and could leapfrog both Tottenham and Arsenal into top spot with a win.

This will be a tight game, Tottenham will be a tough nut to crack at home but Chelsea were very good in midweek, so will be looking to build on that. I’m predicting a draw here.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Aston Villa vs Manchester City

Villa are now out of the Capital One Cup, and to be honest it might be a blessing in disguise for them as now they can focus on what really matters this season, winning games in the Premier League.

A win at Norwich last Saturday gave Villa only their second win of the season and manager Paul Lambert, but now their prized asset Christian Benteke is out injured for between 4-6 weeks, They have a backup in goal scorer from last week Libor Kozak, but Benteke will be sorely missed for the Villa.

Manchester City will be buoyed by two high scoring wins including one against rivals Manchester United and with Bayern Munich coming up on Wednesday it will be interesting to see if he chops and changes his team for this match at Villa Park.

City were shaky against Stoke in their last away game, so it will be interesting to see how Manuel Pellegrini will set up against another side away in the Premier league. He has got most of his squad available and at his disposal it is important that they get a good result heading into the match with Bayern on Wednesday.

Prediction: Aston Villa 0-3 Manchester City

Fulham vs Cardiff City

Fulham just managed to scrape through to the next round of the Capital One cup against Everton on Tuesday, mainly thanks to the partnership of Darren Bent and Dimitar Berbatov up front, so it seems that they will have to stick with that partnership to score goals in this game against Cardiff. They have not won since beating Sunderland on the opening day.

Cardiff were unlucky to lose out to Spurs last weekend in the last minute, with goalkeeper David Marshall in inspired form and they will be hoping he will be in the same kind of form, coming up against Fulham’s attack.

Fulham should win the game, but I feel Cardiff won’t go down quietly.

Prediction: Fulham 2- 1 Cardiff City

Hull vs West Ham

If West Ham want to do well they will really need to start scoring more goals away from home. It doesn’t help the cause that they haven’t really got many options up front with Andy Carroll still out injured.

Hull got an excellent result at Newcastle last weekend thanks to Sone Aluko’s volley in a 2-3 win.

Steve Bruce is developing Hull into a team that could really consolidate a place in this league. Danny Graham is still without a goal but he is getting closer and closer. Once he does score that should give him the confidence to keep on scoring as he is proven from his time at Swansea in this league.

If West Ham score one goal, I think they will try to shut up shop so to speak and try and hold Hull. Will it work? Not for me.

Prediction: Hull 1-1 West Ham

Manchester United vs West Brom

A shambolic display against rivals Man City last week saw United lose for the second time away in the Premier League this season.

Beating Liverpool in the cup this past week should give them confidence to beat West Brom in this fixture. They weren’t they better side on Wednesday, but it is the result that counted in the end and they were on the positive side of a 1-0 win, so that is all David Moyes could have wanted .

West Brom have been short of goals this season, until last week when they scored three against a hapless Sunderland. They will also be tired from taking Arsenal all the way to penalties and losing out on Wednesday.

Robin Van Persie is still out injured for the Red Devils, but I suspect with other strikers Rooney and Hernandez in tow, United will win this comfortably.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 West Brom

Southampton vs Crystal Palace

Palace were totally out played and out classed by Swansea last week which will be a worry for boss Ian Holloway. They will need to step up their game if they want to get anything from this fixture.

Southampton were really good at Liverpool and got their just rewards with a 0-1 win. They have a really good team and with the strike force that they have at their disposal it should be the difference in this game.

Prediction: Southampton 2- 0 Crystal Palace

Swansea vs Arsenal

Swansea have been brilliant since losing their first two games of the season against Manchester United and Spurs. They have drawn with Liverpool and hammered Valencia in the Europa League.

They lost in their defence of the Capital One Cup in midweek but Michael Laudrup seemed to pick a team that would rest his key players so they will be prepared for this game and others coming up.

Arsenal are scoring freely away from home and have won their last 11 away games.

Giroud and Ramsay have got the majority of their goals this season, with the latter being in excellent form, almost unrecognisable from previous seasons, which has given Arsene Wenger’s side belief that this could be the year to finally end the trophy drought.

This is a tough one to call; I think it will be a draw.

Prediction: Swansea 2-2 Arsenal

Stoke City vs Norwich City

Stoke are ticking along nicely. They should be disappointed at the way they conceded against Arsenal, but a win in the cup in mid-week should have put that to bed.

Norwich will be concerned by the way they couldn’t convert their chances against Villa last weekend. Having to go all the way in extra time to beat Watford last week would not have helped Chris Hughton’s men.

I think Stoke will win this one, there has been talk that Chris Hughton might lose his job if the result goes against him, however I doubt that will happen.

Prediction: Stoke City 2-1 Norwich

Sunderland vs Liverpool

Sunderland are under pressure to perform. Bottom of the League, everybody’s eyes on them after it was found out that they complained about former boss Paolo Di Canio before he was sacked last week.

A result against Peterborough in mid-week should have them psyched up ready for this one against a Liverpool side who lost last weekend, so they will feel that they are theirs for the taking.

Liverpool will be worried as they have lost their last two games, in league and cup, but Brendan Rogers will try to assure them that they are the better team and make sure they keep their heads and come away from the north east with a win.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-3 Liverpool

Everton vs Newcastle United

Everton were good value for their win at West Ham last weekend, mainly thanks to the addition of Lukaku and McCarthy at half time.

A defeat in the cup at Fulham on Tuesday was their first in any competition this season, it was a random selection choice by Roberto Martinez and I’m sure he was regretting his decision after as they could have gone far in the competition.

Newcastle will be upset that they couldn’t beat Hull in their last game, and they are not quite ready in my opinion to scale the heights of yesteryear.

Everton have depth now, whereas Newcastle do not. Given this I think Everton will win.

Prediction: Everton 2 -0 Newcastle

Cool Running's Movie Review

Twenty years ago, cinemas around the world were blessed with a heart-warming tale of courage, determination and proving critics wrong.

‘Cool Runnings’ is a film based roughly on a true story, in which a Jamaican Bobsled team tried gaining a place to complete in the Winter Olympics.

Starring John Candy, Leon and Doug E Doug , film buffs will remember the picture being filled with famous catchphrases  such as  “Sanka you dead?” and “Kiss my lucky egg,” making this movie popular with individuals, families and critics all over the land.

The Film begins with Derice Bannock, (Leon) a sprinter trying to gain a place in Jamaica’s track team for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. However, due to a collision on the track with another athlete, his dreams are dashed. Not wanting his dream to come to an end, he searches high and low to find a sport that will allow him to become Olympian.

Derice enlists in the help of ex- United States gold medallist bobsledder Irv Blitzer (Candy), who now lives on the island. Reluctant at first, Irv eventually gives in and tries to aid Derice and his team mates, best friend Sanka Cofie (Doug), Junior Bevil (Rawle D. Lewis), a young sprinter who lacks confidence, not helped along the way by his rich father who thinks his dreams are silly and Yul Brenner (Malik Yoba), a stern, mountain of a man in trying to reach the Winter games.

After overcoming various obstacles such as, funding, believing in themselves and ridicule they start to eventually work together, installing a solid team morale helping them compete for a spot in Canada.

Along with an awesome soundtrack, featuring music artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Diana King and Hans Zimmer. This film brings calypso to the coldest of climates and an uplifting feel to those who watch it.

This film is entertaining, offering a balance of comedy charm that allows the audience to indulge in its light hearted side, and also contains fantastically influencing speeches delivered throughout the picture by the late, great John Candy. If you are a fan of films such as Rocky, a classic, sporting underdog story, then this is definitely a film worth watching.

Bromsgrove Sporting 8 vs 0 Stafford Town FA Vase Match Report

Two Bromsgrove hat-tricks from Will Tibbetts and Ricardo Richards help Sporting stun Stafford Town 8-0 in the FA Vase second qualifying round.

The Victoria Ground was the host to this spectacle on this warm autumn afternoon. It took the home side only 13 minutes to get their first goal thanks to a great run from James Johnson. He skipped past a Stafford defender a delivered the ball into the box, Ricardo Richards hit the ball on the half volley and it bounced up into the top left corner.

Three minutes later and Bromsgrove gained their second. A long diagonal ball from winger Jack Wilson found Ricardo Richards at the back post, he then placed the ball into the far corner with a header to make the score 2-0.

Richards was proving a menace to the Stafford defence and could have gained his hat-trick within the 17 minute mark, though his effort was hit just wide. But the Bromsgrove striker did get his third minutes later, a Jack Wilson cross again was the cause. Richards latched onto the end of the low hit cross to slide the ball under Stafford keeper, Barry Weston.

Stafford’s start to the game went from bad to worse just before the half an hour mark when Chris Morris was shown his second yellow card of the game after making a comment to referee Dell Hill.
Bromsgrove made the most of the sending off by again stepping up the pressure. Lewis Clarke headed just over from a corner and moments later Richards’ powerful shot clipped the top on the cross bar in the final stages of the first half.

Sporting got their forth just before the break. Will Tibbetts baffled the final Stafford defender with his quick footwork to put him through on goal, he then fired the ball past the goalkeeper to put the home side up 4-0 at the half time mark.

Stafford emerged from the re-start a defeated team and within the first 5 minutes their defence completely switched off, allowing Richards to take the ball past Weston, but as he stretched for the ball he couldn’t redirect it goal bound.

The combination of wingers Tibbetts and Wilson was a threat to Stafford all day. Tibbetts almost got his second goal of the game but his powerful shot hit the underside of the bar to keep the score at 4-0.
Frustration started to kick in for ten man Stafford and they soon became nine when defender Chris McComisky was shown his second yellow card when he tried to lash out at James Johnson.
It wasn’t long before the home side got their fifth from yet again another long ball. Another assist from Jack Wilson whose cross found Tibbetts at the back post, an easy tap in for the Sporting winger made the score 5-0.

Stafford’s only threating effort came in the 71st minute. The Sporting defence switched off momentarily to put Burslem though on goal. Bedford did well to close down the angle and Burslem’s shot hit the crossbar.

The six and seventh came minutes apart for Sporting. A poorly defended corner allowed an unmarked Poyner to tap in Bromsgrove’s sixth.

The seventh came after some excellent play from the Rouslers. Wilson’s cross to the far post found Richards who headed the ball back across the box to substitute Snape, he then tapped the ball into an open goal.
Bromsgrove made it eight in the 82nd minute with Tibbetts getting his hat-trick. The Rouslers winger brought the ball under control and cut inside on to his left foot and fired the ball into the far corner of the net, giving Sporting an 8-0 win.

Stafford failed to turn up today, not being able to deal with the home sides long balls was their main downfall and as soon as they became ten their heads dropped and they looked like a defeated side.
Bromsgrove are on a good run of form and will be looking to take this back into the league when they play Bolehall Swifts next Saturday. A fantastic performance from the Rouslers in this FA Vase qualifying match and they will now progress into the first round of the competition, the draw will be announced on Monday.

Ricardo Richards and Will Tibbetts wasn’t the only players to get a hat-trick today. Sporting winger Jack Wilson also got a hat-trick of assist in todays 8-0 win.

Premier League Preview : Game 5 September

Norwich VS Aston Villa

Record so far this season: Aston Villa:  W L L L
                                        Norwich:      D L W L

Norwich are performing inconsistently this season. Losing to Tottenham last Saturday means the Canaries only have won one game this season and although that is more wins than they had at this stage last season, results haven’t been going quite as planned for Chris Hughton’s men.

Gary Hooper could be ready to make his debut after his pre-season  injury, it will be interesting to see if he can adapt well after his moved down from Scottish champions Celtic.

Villa haven’t had the best of starts either, with their only win coming on the opening day against Arsenal. Paul Lambert will want to use this match against his old club to try and build some confidence within the squad.

My main worry for the Villa is Benteke seems to be their only goal threat. Other members of the team will need to step up in order for them to push on with their season.

Prediction: Norwich 2- 2 Aston Villa

Liverpool VS Southampton

Record so far this season: Liverpool: W W W D
                                     Southampton: W D L D

Liverpool lost their 100% record following Monday’s draw with Swansea. They are still undefeated however with Brendan Rogers pleased with the draw saying his team “showed character,” following losing an early goal at the Liberty Stadium.

It will be interesting to see how they do without the attacking prowess of Philippe Coutinho who is now expected to be out of action for a while with a shoulder injury which requires surgery.

Southampton really put pressure on West Ham in their last game and would have been disappointed not to at least of scored, with an inspired Jussi Jaaskelainen keeping them at bay.

Maurico Pochettino will want to come away from Anfield with something after their last game but it will be important for his players to not get frustrated and play their natural game.

This will be a tight game as both teams have started the season well, but I think Liverpool with the home advantage will just edge it.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-0 Southampton

Newcastle vs Hull City

Record so far this season: Newcastle: L D W W
                                        Hull:           L W L D

Newcastle have seen a vast improvement in the past couple of weeks. Now with two wins in a row under their belts confidence should be running high.

The “French Revolution,” as the media have dubbed it, seems to have turned a corner. However, there doesn’t seem to be any real depth to their squad so these types of games are indeed must wins for Alan Pardew’s men.

Hull’s away form will be a problem for them this season. Relying on their home form will be their main concern; however Steve Bruce will be buoyed by their performances in their away games against Chelsea and Man City.

Hull should give Newcastle a good fight but with their striking options limited and Danny Graham not firing on all cylinders, I feel Newcastle will extend their unbeaten run.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Hull City

West Brom vs Sunderland

Record so far this season: West Brom: L D L D
                                       Sunderland: L D L L

A battle of the basement duo at the Hawthorns on Saturday as West Brom will feel that they have a massive chance to secure their first win of the season against struggling Sunderland.

West Brom managed a stoppage time draw with Fulham thanks to Gareth McCauley’s header last weekend, saving them from having an identical record to that of their visitors.

Steve Clarke will be disappointed with the start his team made but once his new signings have settled and he manages to get Shane Long on side, West Brom should be as good as they were last season and shoot up the table.

Sunderland have problems and I think there might be more problems to come. Paolo Di Canio is trying his best to try and incorporate an English vibe to the team but with the amount of foreign players and different languages within their squad, it has been hard for any of his players to settle. Paolo is certainly finding it tough at the top.

Prediction: West Brom 2-0 Sunderland

West Ham United vs Everton

Record so far this season: West Ham: W D L D
                                         Everton:    D D D W

West Ham have their Goalkeeper to thank for his inspiring performance against Southampton last Sunday. They could have even snuck away with the victory if James Collins hadn’t of blasted the ball way over the bar from a glorious, late opportunity.

Sam Allardyce has injury problems with a fair few of his first team out injured, most notably Andy Carroll who could even be out until after the New Year with his on-going foot and ankle problems. This means that the whole team will have to pull together if they are going to be able to find the goals form the Hammers.

Roberto Martinez will be thrilled with last Saturday’s victory over Chelsea, and their unbeaten start to the season.

The signings made by the Spaniard have inspired the team a lot and with Gareth Barry having a fantastic game last week they will be hoping that he could use that performance to inspire Everton to remain unbeaten.

Prediction: West Ham United 1-2 Everton

Chelsea vs Fulham

Record so far this season: Chelsea: W W D L
                                       Fulham:   W L L D

Chelsea have had a very bad week, and if they don’t win this west London derby, it will complete one of the worst weeks Jose Mourinho has endured in either of his spells with them.

Losing at Everton and Losing at home to Basle in the Champions League on Wednesday, Jose needs to find out what his best team is and find out quickly.

His main problem is up front. Eto’o is not fully match fit, and he doesn’t seem to trust Ba and/or Torres to do the business in the final the third of the pitch, so he will have to hope his midfielders step up and score the goals.

Fulham are in a similar position in the sense that they do not know what their best side is. Their last minute draw at home with West Brom last week summed up their season so far. Martin Jol will be hoping that they can go to Stamford Bridge and really put the pressure on a perhaps mentally weak Chelsea.

Unfortunately I don’t think they will be strong enough and Chelsea will be out to put their critic’s right.

Prediction: Chelsea 3- 1 Fulham

Arsenal vs Stoke City

Record so far this season: Arsenal: L W W W
                                     Stoke City: L W W D

Arsenal are on a high at the moment, not dropping a point since their opening day defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger has clearly used his experience to full effect and has proven to the fans, who doubted his judgement literally weeks ago that they should keep the faith with the Frenchman.

Aaron Ramsay’s form has been pivotal to the Gunners, and if he keeps it up, along with the rest of the squad, then Arsenal could mount a serious challenge this season.

Stoke have been playing some decent football under Mark Hughes and with their draw against Manchester City increasing their unbeaten run to three games they go into this not short of confidence.

They wasted several chances against Manchester City, so going up against another of the Premier League title contenders, they will need to try and convert what chances they get against a very much rejuvenated Arsenal side.

Prediction: Arsenal 2- 0 Stoke City.

Crystal Palace vs Swansea City

Record so far this season: Crystal Palace: L L W L
                                         Swansea City: L L W D

Palace played ok against a poor Manchester United team whose performance left a lot to be desired and they were unlucky with their sending off.

They will need to use the home games to really dig their heels in and prove that they deserve to be in this division. Ian Holloway has also had what seems to be a total squad overhaul so it will be interesting to see with his charisma and heart whether he can bring a passion in his players.

Swansea have a busy schedule coming up so it is vital that they utilise their squad to its maximum potential.

Jonjo Shelvey was involved in more ways than he would have liked on Monday against Liverpool. Michael Laudrup has said that he “still has a lot to learn,” but with the best of his generation at the helm, he is sure to learn quickly.

I think this will be a tough game for the Swans, after fantastically winning in Spain on Thursday, it will have to be seen if their team can muster up the same energy levels to win on Sunday.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1- 1 Swansea

Cardiff City vs Tottenham

Record so far this season: Cardiff City: L W D D
                                         Tottenham: W W L W

Cardiff have made a decent start to life in the top flight.

This will be a tough test for the Bluebirds as Spurs, bar the defeat in the North London derby, appear to have replaced Gareth Bale wisely.

Defence will be key for Cardiff in this game and with Steven Caulker playing against his old side; they will hope that he will be motivated extra to get one over on the team that sold him to the team in the Welsh capital back in August.

Spurs will really want to push on now that they have put the North London derby behind them with their win against Norwich last weekend, a team that they couldn’t beat last season.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas Boas will try to use his squad more now that their
Europa League campaign has kicked off and with the team he has on offer thanks to the money from the Bale transfer- they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

Prediction: Cardiff City 1-2 Tottenham

Manchester City vs Manchester United

Record so far this season: Man City: W L W D
                                       Man Utd: W D L W

The Manchester derby – With a new twist on things.

This will be the first Manchester derby for both managers, one who has experience of a fiery “Mersyside derby,” the other having experience in “El Classico.”

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have had a bit of an indifferent start, losing at Cardiff and drawing at Stoke. These are games City should be winning.

City as a team do seem to be at sixes and sevens at the moment but a win in Europe and a win in this fixture might help them really find out what their best starting team is and really challenge United, who after a dominant win in Europe on Wednesday as well are bound to test the blues at Eastlands.

United have been helped massively with Wayne Rooney’s return from injury and a sudden burst of form has aided the confidence of the team, this along with the addition of Fellani seems to have given United a new lease of life under David Moyes but they are still yet to find their ultimate killer edge. The main question will be can they find it on Sunday?

Prediction: Man City 2- 2 Man Utd.

Rush Movie Review

High speculation from motorsport media, plus the critically acclaimed hit documentary film ‘Senna’ which was released in 2011, had left to Ron Howard’s new biographical film ‘Rush’ with a lot to live up to.

Written by Peter Morgan, ‘Rush’ depicts the fierce rivalry between Britain’s James Hunt and Austria’s Niki Lauda as they both battle it out for the biggest motorsport title – Formula One World Champion.

Academy Award winning director Ron Howard has ensured that no stone be unturned in reliving every aspect of the 1976 season including the highs and lows of the drivers’ individual rise to F1 fame.

Chris Hemsworth – best known for this Marvel Studios roles in ‘Thor’ and ‘The Avengers’ – accurately portrays the on and off track characteristics of James Hunt brilliantly, while Daniel Bruhl’s interpretation of Niki Lauda is remarkable.

‘Rush’ highlights the dangers of the sport from the seventies era. 1976 saw Niki Lauda suffer from severe burns after a near fatal accident at the Nurburgring during the German Grand Prix. Having crashed whilst making up places in the treacherous conditions, the fuel pump on Lauda’s Ferrari exploded, turning it into a fireball. He was trapped in the searing inferno for just over a minute before other drivers came to his rescue to save his life.

Whilst hard to watch at times, the film shows Lauda’s remarkable road to recovery, which saw him back in his car in spite of medical advice a mere forty-two days after the accident to continue his championship quest.

Combining competitive racing, personal emotions and an eclectic soundtrack, ‘Rush’ is not only a film aimed at hard core Formula One fans, but also those with no interest in motorsport. Those who have never seen a motorsport race will still enjoy the film, in my opinion, as much as those who saw the real-life Hunt and Lauda fight it out for the championship.

Niki Lauda features on the film as a voice-over both at the beginning and very end of the film, putting his own view across of the battles that he faced during that season – and paying tribute to Hunt – who died of a heart attack at the age of 44 in 1993.

I would definitely recommend seeing ‘Rush’ on the big screen. The cinematography and iconic paddock sounds makes for a highly interesting and entertaining watch.

Arctic Monkeys AM Album Review

Anyone who has followed the Sheffield four-piece Arctic Monkeys since their debut in 2006 will be able to tell you the band have come a long way since the songs about teenage nightlife, wedding singers and moody girlfriends that filled their first album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Now with the release of their fifth studio album AM, Arctic Monkeys are unapologetic about the undeniable changes in their musical direction, as frontman Alex Turner told NME “I don’t think anyone really expects us to continue – or return to – the approach we had seven years ago”.

You would be forgiven for assuming that Arctic Monkeys attempted to just recreate the music on their collective iPods, as many of the songs on AM are clearly heavily influenced by R&B, hip hop and ‘70s rock. However it is clear they were certainly not lazy in doing so, as Alex Turner described “you gotta be careful which elements you take. It’s like a chemical reaction, you get a bit too much of one thing and you don’t get any bang.” But rest assured, ‘AM’ provides plenty of “bang”.

The album opens with the electrifying guitar riff of Do I Wanna Know?, and with its epic chorus it sounds like Arctic Monkeys are completely back on form compared to their dirgy and Bob Dylan-esque previous albums Humbug and Suck It And See, respectively. Despite all the time spent in LA to record this album, ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ as the first track reassures its listeners that Arctic Monkeys are still the same four reluctant rockers from Sheffield, as Alex Turner’s notorious Northern accent prevails, “… sticks around like summat in your teeth?” .

R U Mine? is the first of many songs on the album to recall ‘70s rock but no two songs sound the same, as Arabella, a definite standout track, is a successful merger of a Dr Dre-influenced intro and a chorus reminiscent of Black Sabbath (as strange as it sounds), I Want It All reeks of glam rock and the comparisons that could be made between Mad Sounds and Lou Reed’s Take A Walk On The Wild Side are endless.

One For The Road evokes more of an R&B style as Alex Turner’s lyrics and vocal style are noticeably more sensual, but still retains the vintage guitar riffs that are becoming ‘AM’s trademark. Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? , like Arabella and One For The Road, also makes use of a hip-hop style intro but out of all twelve songs, lyrically it could belong on their first album.

In contrast to the majority of songs on AM, No. 1 Party Anthem is slower and its wistful lyrics are reminiscent of those found on their previous album Suck It And See, but the heavy presence of piano ventures into cabaret territory at times, however many fans have already stated that slow dancing to this song has made it on to their bucket lists. The driving drum beat and guitar in Snap Out Of It defies any listener to sit still while listening to it, and observant listeners might recognise a guest appearance by Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme on the witty and provocative Knee Socks.

AM finishes with Alex Turner’s homage to poet John Cooper Clarke, I Wanna Be Yours, its soft, slow and echoey drum beat evoking that of a beating heart and lyrics which every young girl would dream of having sung to them.

Despite the radical changes in style, Arctic Monkeys songs haven’t lost any of the imagery, intelligence and relatability of the songs the British public fell in love with back in 2006. Is it safe to say the awkward yet witty and incredibly talented youths behind the iconic ‘Whatever People Say I Am…” haven’t changed, as much as people like to believe, but just grown up?
