Bromsgrove Sporting have been eliminated from the Smedley Crooke Cup after losing 1-0 against a strong Lye Town that have only lost once in their last 31 matches.

The quarter final played at the Victoria Ground was a pretty even game with both teams having equal possession and creating chances inside the opening half.

Lye Town’s Richard Anslow had the first challenging effort of the game and brought a good save out of Sporting goalkeeper Tom Savage. His second moments later was a great chance to take an early lead but the shot was high and wide.

Joe Brooks was able to create two efforts of his own for the Rouslers inside the opening quarter but both long ranged shots failed to threaten the away goal.

Lye’s Town was creating more chances inside the first half with Ben Jevons and Richard Anslow supplying two more chances before the break. Neither found the target.

The second half was again equal in terms of possession but it was the away side who created more efforts on goal.

Richard Anslow had a great opportunity to give the away side the lead straight after the re-start but Tom Savage again denied the striker after he went into a one on one position.

Minutes later Lye almost opened the scoring when a Sporting back pass hit the post. The ball was the right side of the post in Sporting’s eyes as the ball rolled out for a corner.

The home side responded well and almost grabbed the lead just over the hour mark. Bromsgrove proved a threat from outside the box and Joe Lawley reinforced this when his shot, destined for the bottom corner, brought a good diving save to Danny Watson’s left.

Eventually the away side broke the deadlock after 64 minutes. A long ball was switched from the far side into the box and found an unmarked Ben Hadley who then side footed the ball past Tom Savage to give Lye Town a 1-0 lead.

Late into injury time Bromsgrove pushed everyone forward, including goalkeeper Tom Savage, for the corner and once cleared Lye Town had the chance for their second. Their attempt was blocked by a Bromsgrove defender and they failed to knock the ball into an empty net.

In the final moments of the game frustration kicked in and Bromsgrove’s Keith Draper was shown a second yellow card for tripping Lee Dimmock after he kicked the ball away. Dimmocks poor reaction to the incident earned him a straight red after he head-butted Draper.

Lye Town was able to see off the remainder of the game to progress through to the next round after winning 1-0.

Sporting played well and matched Lye Town in possession and overall the game was pretty equal. Bromsgrove wasn’t really too much of a threat up front though due to the 4-3-3 formation they played and they sat deep at times leaving few players going forward. But it still was a good performance from the Rouslers.

Oblivion (2013) Review

The year is 2077 and Earth is left in a desolate wasteland after the war that Aliens brought to the planet 60 years earlier. Hard to believe that humans actually won the war.

Anyway, despite humanity winning the planet was lost and the only known human inhabitants of Earth is a mechanics team made up of Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and Victoria “Vik” Olsen (Andrea Riseborough). Jack is the mechanic and Victoria, who has never been down onto the planet since the war, acts as Jack’s navigator as she feeds him information from an interface above in their home.

Jack’s job is to monitor and repair the drones that now protect a mining project to gather Earth’s valuable remaining resources (water). But things begin to change once Jack witnesses a shuttle crash on earth two weeks before their mission completion and he rescues another human in the wreckage. Jack then begins to unravel a whole new meaning to why they are there and his world is tipped upside-down once he realises that the human he saved is the woman from his dreams, Julia (Olga Jurylenko).

First of all this movie is very beautiful, the landscape and the special effects in this film really are fantastic and significantly submerge you in this desolate Sci-fi landscape. Director JosephKosinski (TRON) really does have an eye for great special effects in his movies. The soundtrack is also very impressive and it complements the special effects really well as it adds that extra layer of depth that reels you into the experience.

Tom Cruise gives a great acting performance in this movie as per usual. He seems to pull off a top job near enough every time and I can’t remember the last time I saw a bad performance from him. You do get immersed into his character but I feel that is the only character that you do connect with. You learn a lot about him and dive deep into his character background from his dreams to Jack’s green paradise isolated from the desolate world.

Oblivion is paced very well at the beginning and you are given a perfect amount of time to learn about Jack and attach yourself emotionally to this character.

The film does a good job at the start but it does feel too rushed towards the end and that perfect pacing goes completely out the window as the story is quickly tied up.

Oblivion fails to provide you with enough substance to invest emotionally in other characters. It feels as though you are given small tasters and more will be explored later on but that never arrives. Morgan Freeman’s character (Beech) reveals almost nothing about himself and the same can be said about Julia (the woman from Jack’s dream he finds in the rubble) and because of this and how the story unravels you don’t get an emotional attachment to those characters.

Some things are very predictable in Oblivion as well. The stale, robotic and static like tone to the woman Jack and Vik communicate with reminded me of the computer at the end of Terminator Salvation that they spoke to. The tone makes it so predictable to what is going on and who she is. But saying this there are generally moments that I didn’t see coming in this film and they did come as a surprise.

Overall Oblivion is very fun and enjoyable with its main highlight being the beauty of the landscape created through its impressive special effects. It does lack in character depth other than Tom Cruise’s character and the story does feel like it should have fit a longer running time as events feel too rushed towards the end of the film. Things are very predictable but certain things generally do come at a surprise and add to the enjoyment of this film. Oblivion is a film I would recommend seeing, it’s not going to blow your mind and reshape the Sci-fi genre but it is a fun and enjoyable experience that’s worth watching.

Not Going Out Season 6 Review and New Series Preview

Season 6: Episode 3 Review

Not going out returns from the ski slopes back to the comfort of Lee’s flat to continue the comedy genius.

Last week’s episode was slightly disappointing due to the confinement of the cable cart. I know you are normally confined just to the flat in certain episodes but last weeks you found that there was a lack of factors the characters could interact with other than the pregnant woman.

This week’s episode, titled ‘Therapy’, stars the usual cast of Lee, Daisy, Lucy and another appearance from Lee’s dad. Lucy starts taking up classes in Psychology and Therapy and eventually Lee uses Lucy’s new skills to patch up his troubled relationship with his farther.

This show is currently one of the funniest shows on TV and that sarcastic and quick witted comedy is what makes the show, this episode doesn’t fail to deliver on the comedy front.  The show has enough puns to try for a world record and responses to questions are ninety percent of the time answered with sarcasm. Yes jokes can be predictable at times but it still keeps you laughing.

In parts of this episode such as where Lee asks Lucy to guess what disorder he is describing and when Lee has a personal therapy session with Lucy you get this constant reel of quick witted comedy. It is hilarious and this is what the show does best.

Overall if you don’t like puns being fired at you for 30 minutes then this isn’t for you. But if you are willing to endure half an hour of laughing out loud and at times side splitting comedy then this show is for you. The show seems to be dealing with the loss of Tim very well and his serious like tone not missed. Yes jokes are predictable but listening the how everything is presented by Lee Mack is the penultimate factor that helps deliver this sitcom as comedy gold on TV.

I would seriously recommend any one to purchase the previous series' of Not Going Out, they are arguably more funny than season 6 and well worth the money.

Evil Dead (2013) Review

It’s back to the notorious cabin, sporting the same evil incubating cellar. Drug addict Mia (Jane Levy), along with run-away brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) and gang of determined friends’ journey to the deserted cabin in an attempt to kick Mia’s addiction. Instead they are greeted with a room of dead cats, a book bound in human flesh, and an evil spirit hell bent on feeding on everyone’s souls, to name but a few of the cabin come rehab’s delightful features. Activities include cutting off your own body parts, reading extracts from a book of the dead after specifically being told not to, and generally having a terrible time.

Whereas The Evil Dead doesn’t have the same absurdity as its original, feeling much more like your average zombie film with the loss of its fantasy edge, it does now have logic on its side, something the original clearly didn’t feel was a necessity for a film.

Unlike the original, we are now treated with the knowledge of why the teenagers have arrived at the cabin, and even who the cabin actually belongs to. Aren’t we lucky. The book of the dead is now also burn proof! So warding off evil is now a bit more of a challenge.

Overall, although a bit monotonous, and with a very ‘things finally seem to be okay, oh no wait they’re not, oh wait, yes they are’ kind of ending, it does not disappoint in terms of gore, and jumpy moments there are plenty!

If watching other humans being slashed to pieces is your scene, you must see The Evil Dead!

New Trailers: Man of Steel

Over the last few days we have seen some epic trailers released for some of this summer’s potential blockbuster hits. Trailers such as Man of Steel, Only God Forgives and a trailer for the new Zombie Land TV Series.

Man of Steel

The latest movie from director Zack Snyder (Watchmen and 300) and producer Christopher Nolan (The Dark Night) looks set to be a really big triumph once the movie hits our screens. The trailer doesn’t give too much away when it comes to story but shows us that it is going to lead the style of Batman Begins (Christopher Nolan) by showing the development of the main hero and how they become this superhero. The action packed trailer is very impressive and the film is looking like a must see once it is released. The initial problems behind the older superhero films is that sense of invincibility that made the films cheesy and boring and I’m wondering how they are going to create that emotional vulnerability behind this indestructible godly character. If it is pulled off then this could be one of the films of te year. Trailer below:-

Only God Forgives

Ryan Gosling teams back up with director Nicolas Winding Refn of the hit film Drive (2011). This could be the last time we see Gosling on the acting front for a while as he pursues a directing path. Only God Forgives latest trailer still doesn’t show too much in terms of story but shows some action scenes. This film looks as though it could be structured like Drive with the superb writing and acting performance focussed more on than the action scenes. Trailer below:-

Zombieland (TV Series)

Zombieland the TV series is the follow up to the 2009 comedy movie and is exclusive to Amazon (Amazon Instant or Love Film in the UK). The short trailer looks as though the series is keeping to the films structure and applying the same comedic style contained within the film. Though the new series looks as though it has completely missed the comedy gold within in the movie. It looks as though this isnt going to be something TV goers are going to miss. The show stars Kirk Ward, Tyler Ross, Maiara Walsh as they keep to the classic rules set out in Zombieland. Most of all the pilot is available now on Amazon Instant or LoveFilm. Trailer Below:-

Identity Thief (2013) Review

Identity Thief is a comedy that ultimately try’s to combine a slightly mediocre comedic presence with the poorly written idea of humanising a criminal and life destroying profession, the ‘Identity Thief’.

Jason Bateman stars Sandy Paterson, a farther of two and accountant, who is taken advantage off due to his feminine name and gets his identity stolen by fraudster Dianna (Bridesmaids Melissa McCarthy). As things unfold it’s eventually clear that this film is a road trip movie once Sandy realises he must confront Dianna in Miami and bring her back to Denver.

This film is funny at times and Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy give a lot to their performance and do help this film become an enjoyable experience, despite being dragged down by the shoddy plot line.

You see problems unfolding right from the beginning when it comes to the writing. The lack of believability, emphasised even before Sandy heads out to catch his fraudster sets the tone to this film. Sandy seems to be living in an alien world where help isn’t at hand by both his credit card company and the police.

Now here is the first major problem when it comes to believability, the law enforcers, (you know, the people that up hold the law and stop crimes from being committing). Well these crime stoppers ultimately tell Sandy that they won’t help him but do suggest that he kidnaps Dianna and brings her back to Denver so they will arrest her. Quite possibly some of the worst legal advice I’ve ever heard on screen especially from a Detective as well. This sets the ball rolling for the poor backbone of a story that runs through this film.

You also get these cameo like appearances from Genesis Rodriguez and Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. that are chasing Dianna for another fraudulent job she has committed. Those two characters aren’t really given a purpose other than to push Dianna into having a reason to give into Sandy and come back with him. Their roles are overlooked quite frequently and at points you even forget they are still chasing Dianna.

But despite these faults in the story they are only small minor problems that orbit the main downfall of the overall story. This is to try and humanize a criminal that ruins the lives of many for their own greed. The story starts by portraying the selfish and callous lifestyles of the identity thief. The film aims to win you over by trying to convert your perceptions of this character and make you forgive this criminal by justifying the reasoning behind her actions. It’s a poor attempt at an overall plot line and it’s that lack of realism that fails to get the reaction that the story is trying to draw out of the audience.

No it’s not a film that will leave you in stitches and with it being almost two hours long it is stretching the limits of when a film such as this start to drag. Yes the plot lets it down but the silliness does create an enjoyable film though that is funny in parts, the majority of the time this comes from Melissa McCarthy’s character Dianna.

Overall if you are looking for a comedy with a solid story and that is intensely funny then this isn’t the film for you. This films plot is completely hollow due to the lack of believability and strange attempt to humanize the ‘Identity Thief’. Yes this is a comedy and there are funny moments at certain points but the film won’t have you laughing throughout. This film is enjoyable though and is a very easy watch but it’s not something that you should rush out your way to see.

Please give this a like or a share on Facebook and Twitter. We now have a Facebook page, a like will be greatly appreciated.

Elysium Trailer

Elysium is the new Sc-Fi Action film from director Neill Blomkamp (District 9). Elysium, starring Matt Damon (as Max De Costa), Jodie Foster (as Secretary Rhodes, head of security on Elysium) and Sharlto Copley (as Kuger), is set in the year 2154 and clearly has some implications presents taken from District 9.

The new trailer for the movie shows off a desolate looking earth where the only safe haven is in a space station where only the wealthy may bask in its beauty city. The paradise know as Elysium inhabits a place where sickness, poverty and war are extinct and left to exist in the poor and polluted looking earth.

District 9 focused on the slums in South Africa and focused on the poor living there. This movie again looks at the poor, but shows the vast contrast between the living conditions of those that are in poverty and the wealthy.

Max De Costa looks to travel to Elysium for some reason, the reason isn’t revealed in the trailer but could possibly be to restore some balance in humanity’s separation of wealth. Anyway in order for Max to infiltrate, what is the heaviest guarded place in the universe, he gets what looks to be some bionic attachment to his body in order for him to complete this mission.

The action pack trailer has a lot on but not too much when it comes to revealing the plot other than Max must get to Elysium. The trailer does create some interest by revealing very little and instead focusing on showing some action. Expect another trailer soon that reveals more when it comes to story.

Elysium is out in cinemas this summer on August 9th.

Bromsgrove Sporting 0 vs 4 Walsall Wood | Match Report

Bromsgrove Sporting 0 v 4 Walsall Wood

Football Match Report:

 Reported By Conor Rees

13/04/2013

Bromsgrove Sporting’s last home league game of the season ended in a heavy defeat from title favourites Walsall Wood 4-0.

First half strikes from Murray, Taylor-Boyce and Danny Forrest saw second place Walsall Wood up 3-0 at the break with Sporting a man light after Roberts’ sending off inside 15 minutes. The visitors were able to see off the remainder of the second half to earn all three points.

It was the home side though who supplied the first good effort of the game when Andy Nicol’s free kick brought a good diving save out of Walsall goalkeeper Dale Faultless.

But the Rouslers game was made even harder when defender Arron Roberts was shown red for the second time in 2 weeks after handling the ball inside the box. The initial penalty was saved but the rebound was squared back across the box for Murray to tap the ball into the net.

Sporting’s game went from bad to worse three minutes later when the lead was doubled. Taylor-Boyce ran into the far right of the box and fired a powerful shot towards the goal. The ball took a deflection of Sporting’s Gleadow that directed the ball into the net.

Walsall continued to mount the pressure with a string of chances from Bilgimer and Taylor-Boyce. The away side eventually found their third ten minutes from the break thanks to a superb curling effort just inside the near edge of the box from Danny Forrest.

Bromsgrove couldn’t get back to grips with the game after the sending off. The only other effort for the home side was a Nick Harris free kick that was saved by the Walsall goalkeeper.

The start of the second half was a very dull affair with the majority of play just being an exchange in possession in the midfield area.

Bromsgrove goalkeeper Tom Savage postponed Walsall’s fourth when he made a fantastic clawing save to deny substitute Anthony Juxon thirteen minutes from time.

Walsall did eventually get their third inside added time. Walsall’s free kick was laid off to defender Craig Deakin who struck the ball just inside Savage’s right hand post from outside the box to give the away side all three points.

Walsall still have nine games in hand over third place Sporting and three over first place Littleton. Bromsgrove’s promotion hopes were ended a while back now but they can still end the season on a high with three points against Pelsall Villa on Tuesday evening.

Gadget Show Live Roundup 2013

So in this final roundup of the Gadget show live 2013 I’ll talk about everything else worth you knowing. The Gadget Show live 2013 in Birmingham displayed everything from the new Ultra TV from LG to a take on the cheese grater.

The showed featured, as you would expect, loads of cars pimped out to the max, audio equipment to meet anyone’s needs and video games galore. At the end of all this walking around and feasting your eyes on the tech on show we also had a live show that lasted about an hour. But did it impress or was it merely a scrap heap and just present with the mediocre tech of today?

Whilst at the Gadget Show Live 2013 I got to chance to be one of the lucky people to try out the new Turtle Beach XP Seven series gaming Headset. The headset has been worked and sculptured around the MLG circuit with Major League Gaming providing input into the headset design. XP Seven is now the official MLG Gaming Headset and can be used with all consoles, PC and Mac.

The headset comes costs $279.99 for the console version, the PC and Mac version is slightly cheaper at $250 and the Premium Mobile version at $150. The headset comes fitted with an immersive Dolby Digital Surround system and the ability to connect your phone to either play music or take calls. I tried the console version and this new headset, the first to be based for competitive gaming, looks to chase after and take the crown away from Astro and its Mix Amp.

XP Seven is very comfy and cancels out all background noise, the head band and ear cups material being the main factor. The only criticism is that I had was that you really do need to take some time out to learn XP Sevens customisation. The box/ mix amp like console that accompanies the headset does require some fine tuning to really get the sound setting to your taste. There are a lot of buttons and about six settings on the main dial alone with even more on the side so it can be quite daunting once you first see the product.

But that was my only criticisms form my short trial and even that wouldn’t soon be problematic once you get used to all the settings. I obviously did only get a short time with the product though.

Epic also attended the expo with four teams that were set a challenge to each create a new game and show the results off at the show. The better of the four was a sports like game taking place on floating platforms suspended in the air. The goal was to score in the opposing goal and create a path across the platforms to the opposition’s area.

A cool part to the future tech zone was a holographic reflective slab on the floor. From a distance it’s simply just a slab, but with the correct light as you get closer a 3D image begins to appear. As you move around the image changes. For example on one they had a house and as you move around the slab the image changed allowing you to see different levels and each floor. I reiterate that it is a cool feature but that’s about it at this stage as I can’t really see much usefulness coming out of it in the near future. But I’m sure someone will sooner or later.

Parrot also had a booth as I previous stated a few days ago. Click here to read what Parrot brought to the table.  Video games were the most attended product with companies such as EA and Capcom allowing you to play some new games such as Defiance and GRID 2.

Microsoft had the biggest booth at the expo with a lot of computer tech as you would expect. There was a cool little stall they had whereby they was showing another implication of what a hacked/ modified Kinect sensor can do. This is all hooked up to a 3D mapping software on the computer and you are able to print a miniaturized sculpture of your 3D head. Alienware had a big stall also screening off their high end gaming laptops and PC’s. I thought it was great that they was offering people multiple chances of winning prizes there. Scratch cards to win T-shirts or a gaming mouse, sign up competitions or winning stuff by beating a high score on a racing game.

The finale event was the Gadget Show Live stage event presented By Polly, Jason and John. The live show wasn’t really a massive spectacular. Yes it was respectable and you got a chance to meet/ see the presenters of the show but it was more of a massive prize giveaway than a show. The prizes did vary from small remote control cars to Nexus tablets but overall it was just a fun way to top off the event with a bit of light hearted entertainment.

Please give us a like on our new Facebook page to keep up to date with the latest and greatest entertainment. A share and a like will also be greatly appreciated.

Dark Skies (2013) Review

Dark Skies is the new horror/Sci-Fi movie that tells the story of the Barrett family living in the American suburbs. The Barrett’s are currently facing financial difficulties and parents, Lacy Barrett (KeriRussell) and Daniel Barrett (Josh Hamilton), are stuck in a strained relationship resulting in an already troubled family life. But that’s the least of their problems as the strange goings-on isolated and fixated on the family gradually begin to spiral out of control and the seriousness of these occurrences gradually get worse.

Dark Skies comes from director and writer Scott Stewart (director of Legion, Priest). Stewart has previously worked on some big films (such as Sin City and Jurassic Park, though not from a director or writers position) and is also the director for the new and upcoming post-apocalyptic TV series Defiance that starts on Tuesday.

The peculiar events begin disguised as an animal’s antics that has gained entry to the house and feasted during a mid-night snack in the Barrett’s fridge. The strange events become unexplainable where alarms are going off, photos are disappearing and flocks off birds are crashing into the Barrett home to the point where the perpetrator is reviled as Aliens.

The Barrett’s are a family of four and the two children, Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and Sam (Kadan Rockett), also suffer along with their parents. It isn’t only weird incidents that take place, the Barrett’s also have moments where they can’t account for periods of time during their day as the Aliens take over their bodies for a reason that I’m not going to spoil.

Dark Skies has a few good tension building scenes that generally are scary. The film does have a lot of jumpy moments but the majority are caused by the sharp, ear-piercing sound that is well overused throughout this movie. These moment’s aren’t scary and eradicates the tension that has built up time and time again. But when used well to create those few scary scenes they are very well worked and get a great reaction out of you. There just doesn’t need to be so many of the sharp sounds though.

My other criticism is that this Horror/Sc-Fi, as it has been categorized  has almost as much laughs as it does scares. When you are looking to create a horror you want the audience to be on the edge of their seats and feel the same sense of fear that the characters in the movie are going through. If you insert these funny moments, that even if they wasn’t intended to be funny was still humorous, then it takes away a fair deal of the tension and creates a sense of ease when watching.

The moment that springs to mind is around the mid-point of the movie where Lacy is showing a couple around a home (as her job is an estate agent) and you then hear this high pitched sound and Lacy doesn’t have control over her body anymore. She just stops mid-conversation and walks forward to a glass sliding door and out of the blue just repeatedly head-butts the door. I generally found this scene funny, it’s unexpected and something you don’t expect to gain from a horror.

I thought the acting was generally very good from the lead actors and Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton do create this credible stretched relationship and they do help to create a sense of realism at times. Other characters though seem to play these stereotypical, cheesy characters. The police officer that comes out and gives a reasonable excuse to the problems that they have encountered or the alien expert that the family consult during the film.

Overall the film is okay and does have some scary moments that create good tension. The film is let down in many areas though. The film needs more of those scary tension building moments and scrap the constant loud sound effects that you’re anticipating and worrying more about than the few handful of scares throughout. But the main downfall is the believability, it’s riddled with the classic horror stereotypes throughout. I was disappointed with the ending as well that ultimately cripples the whole story due to the high amount of confusion it produces. You expect that big finale to a horror film that leaves you more on edge than anything but this film is generally summed up by how far away from a great horror it is by the confusion more than anything it embeds within your mind.

The Gadget Show: Parrot

Parrot
The Gadget Show Live 2013

Parrot was at the Gadget Show Live this year and was showing off a range of the wireless technology that the company is known for. They had quite a few products such as a wireless remote control AR Drones, a range of gadgets for your car and some tablets.

Parrot also brought along its Parrot Zikmu Solo wirelesshi-fi stereo speaker tower. The speakers pack a punch when it comes to its finesse and design due to its beauty as an audio tower. The tower has a total power of 100W and can be easily controlled via your tablet or smartphone and comes in black and white . The 800 euro price tag for a single tower (or £699.99 form certain stores in the UK such as Amazon) is quite pricey and the product can be a bit confusing when you take a first quick look. It does have a docking station on the top if you don’t want to use a wireless way to play your music but it is a lightning adapter (so an adapter will be required if using an iPhone 5). But for the price tag I do think that there was better audio speakers at the Expo.

The Parrot Zik wireless headphones was also on show at the expo. The Parrot Wireless headphones are again another product form Parrot that comes with a hefty price tag of £249. They are quite comfy around the ear cups and cancel out background sound, though sound does seem to leak out the ear cups. After a while the headband can cause some uncomfort though due to weight of these headphones being a lot larger than others out there.

It again has this sleek and beautiful design that comes with a lot of the Parrot’s product portfolio. But it’s the features on the outside of the ear cups that got my real interest. It can be annoying to keep removing your phone or music player out of your pocket to change the track and especially on wireless headphones. The Zik on the other hand has this unique feature whereby you can control the volume and change the track by moving your finger along the outside of the left ear cup. You simply move your finger side to side to change the track and up and down to change the volume levels. A really cool feature to have on your headphones but even cooler is that the technology in these headphones that also pause the song for you when you take them off.

A piece of art they may be, but they also accompany a superb sound quality from the low levels of the bass to creating a dance sensation in your ears. The sound is great but the unique selling point is the touch pad on the left ear-cup. But if you do want to purchase this piece of art it will leave a massive whole in your pocket. Apart from the price though I was really impressed in the Parrot Zik headphones at the Gadget Show Live.

Gadget Show Live : Cars, Robot Wars and Top Gear

Gadget Show Live 2013 Cars and Driving Experiences

The Gadget Show Live didn’t only show off some great tech, they showed us some great cars. There was some driving experiences from Top Gear, Formula 1 and Volkswagen as well as many cars pimped out to the max for the perfect eye candy.

Volkswagen set up a stall giving drivers the chance to test out the new park assist feature in their brand new Volkswagen Golf and the GTi (the first imported to the UK). You must have had a UK driving license for two years in order to have a drive in the dual controlled car with one of the Volkswagen drivers. On top off that there was also hefty waiting times to have a go of around an hour. But the features did look impressive and I do hold my hat off to Volkswagen for offering the only real driving experience at the expedition. From looking from the side lines though it did seem very impressive and the sensors on the car looked very accurate. I didn’t see any drivers encounter a problem and all seemed to park accurately. When the VW Golf does launch in the UK it will have a good selling point.

There was some other driving experiences form Top Gear and Formula 1 but these where only virtual reality rides. They was something different and was a bit of fun to experience what it would be like in one of the top super cars in today’s world. But the only downside was it wasn’t long enough and didn’t really generate the level of enjoyment you should of got out of this experience from the extra £5 price tag you had to pay per go.

As soon as you walked into the second room the first thing that took to your attention was the Revere Range Rover, pimped out to the max with more tech inside than any other car I’ve seen before. The car looks beautiful from the outside but even better on the inside. The hefty £95k priced car was fitted with everything from digital screens on the floor, tablets, and the comfort of beautiful looking leather chairs. To top it off a bottle of champagne in the back.

A team from Cambridge University came down to show off their new solar paneled car which, according to the Coventry Telegraph, should run the same amount of power as a hairdryer at cruising speeds of 60mph.

Other car experiences include some companies showing of the sheer power and bass they could pack into some of their audio equipment fitted inside some slick looking vehicles. There was a few remote control experiences as well including a ten man formula 1 race that was an extremely fun idea, especially with your friends. This also gave you the opportunity to win some cool prizes. Robot Wars was also there allowing three players at a time to take to the remote controls and battle it out for a few minutes.

Not Going Out Season 6 Review and New Series Preview

Not Going Out Season 6
Episode 1 Review and new series Preview

Not going Out has returned to or screens on the BBC along with the hilarious comedy genius, Lee Mack. Lee, Lucy and Daisy star in the first episode of season six, with the only regular absence being Tim. I love this show and it’s so cleverly written around the star of the show, Lee Mack. I’m a big fan of his and ultimately it’s the sarcastic, quick witted response’s that give you these side splitting laughs. It’s so clever written because this is what Lee Mack is good at on his comedy shows and his characters also contains this talent.

This episode revolves around Lucy accidently running over one of her client’s pet rabbits and the panic then unfolds. In typical Not Going Out Fashion Lucy gets Lee’s help and inevitably make the situation worse. It reminded me of the previous episode where Tim and Lee mistakenly get a stash of drugs after picking up the identical wrong coats. By trying to solve the problem they make it worse with hilarious consequences for us the watchers. They try to simply replace the Rabbit but go about it the hard way with lies, breaking into a pet shop and much more.

This show is brilliant and truly amazing. It guarantees a laugh and will keep you doing so as long as the star, Lee Mack, continues his quick witted and sarcastic responses. If you haven’t seen this before then I recommend you check out the previous five season and keep tuned into the rest of this season.

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 16 Welcome to the Tombs Review

The Walking Dead Season 3 Finale
Episode 16: Welcome to the Tombs
In Depth Synopsis and Episode Review

This is the moment we have been anticipating since the mid-season premier. This attack has been gradually and tensely building up to the climax we find ourselves today at. Andrea is still locked up in the Gov’s workshop, Daryl is getting over the loss of his brother and Rick awaiting an imminent attack.

On last week’s installment we saw the sad departure of Merle, the infamous character that we saw briefly in season one and properly uncovered his true colors in the conclusion of last week’s episode. Michonne was never handed in and the Gov lost eight men including one of the two survivors that entered in with Tyreese and Sasha.

We begin looking at a bloodied Governor starring down the camera and beating a poor victim to near death. Is it Andrea? Has he caught Rick?

No its Milton. He has found out about Milton’s loyalty to Woodbury’s people by putting their concerns above those of Rick’s so called and made up threat to Woodbury.

The Gov is pinning the blame for the eight lives lost in last week’s solo attack from Merle on Milton’s actions. Milton asks what the Gov’s daughter would think but all he gets in a sinister tone, “she would be afraid.” The Gov throws him into the same room as Andrea and tells him to collect some tools behind her (one of which he knocks on the floor behind her). The Gov says that he isn’t leaving this room until he kills Andrea.

Milton’s loyalties have been tested over the past few weeks and he then in that split second chose to fight against the thing that has been repressing him for a long time. He turns around and attempts to stab the Gov but his weakness is Milton’s downfall and the Gov responds by stabbing him in the chest. He says I told you will kill her and now you are going to rip her apart once you turn. A brutal start to the episode sets the bar to what looks to be an action packed episode.

Rick and the others are preparing for an attack, moving their things into the cars to look like they are moving out (really they are just moving there things away and out of any of the fighting). And yes ghost Lauri makes another appearance in front of Rick. Rick still isn’t out of the woods with the whole crazy lark yet but he is on the road to recovery. He is helped by a confrontation with Michonne as she tells him that she basically forgives him for considering the Gov’s proposition.

It’s very hectic at Woodbury and the Gov gives another falsified speech about how Rick is a danger to Woodbury’s life style. He puts off the interests of Tyreese and Sasha as they opt to stay put and protect Woodbury, they have no intention of killing anyone. Then they head out to siege the prison.

The Woodbury army charge into the prison with clearly planned out tactics but yet like a bull in a china shop when it comes to stealth, blowing up both watch towers and firing exploding ammunition to alert anyone in the vicinity. They pull up and take out the Walkers in the area before using a car to knock down the gate. There isn’t any resistance and we are made to think that perhaps Rick and everyone has retreated.

They enter the prison still unchallenged and into the living quarters (cell blocks) that they have recently called home. The Gov finds only a highlighted section of the Bible reading: “And shall come forth; they that have done well, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation”. But as you can imagine and giving the Gov’s recent state of mind, arguably more crazy than Rick as of late, that this quote files straight past him with no impact whatsoever.

Meanwhile Andrea is still locked and strapped to the Gov’s chair. Milton is still alive but not for much longer. You can hear the pain he is in after every word he speaks to Andrea. He gives her an escape route with the tools he dropped behind her but tells her to hurry, he knows his fate is already decided and now a waiting game. His last question is to ask why Andrea stayed at Woodbury. Her reply is subtle and you really understand the tug of war Andrea has been experiencing. She wanted to save everyone including the Gov and she didn’t want anyone to die.

The Woodbury intruders wander around the dark unsafe side of the prison and spilt into groups. A flash bang gets thrown into the wanderers and panic breaks out. An alarm goes off and Walkers appear. You clearly see the manipulation of the Gov. These aren’t soldiers, they are everyday citizens in a dark new world. They flee and once outside undergo fire from Maggie and Glen from the catwalk above.

The retreat begins and one lone teenage boy runs into the concealed Hershall, Carl and Beth. The boy obviously scared begins to put his weapon down until the unexpected action of Carl opening fire takes place. Carl has definitely been hit hard since his mother’s death. He vulnerability died with his mother and since then has grown more into his dad’s footsteps. But he is still young and his actions are more to prove a point to his dad than anything else.

After the rest of the Govs men retreat out of sight the prison settlers regroup and Rick learns of his son’s actions, reluctant at first to believe them but he has learnt to listen Hershall’s judgement.

We then witness the definition of brutality and how evil the Gov has become. He catches up with his fleeing Woodbury crew and halts their retreat. He orders them to go back and he gets an unresponsive reply from his people. They say Rick can have the prison and to just leave them but the Gov drowns out all excuses and you see anger and the crazy click wash over his face. He opens fire on everyone in front of him. He turns around to find Allen nervously point his weapon at him. The Gov without hesitating shoots him in the head and makes use of his nerves as his weakness. He departs the slaughter vicinity with the only survivors to his knowledge, Martinez and Bowman. There is though one other survivor.

Rick is about to go after the Gov to finally end this chapter, with Michonne and Daryl. He confronts Carl and I think his reasoning to why he killed that boy shocks even Rick. Rick is sort of blamed by Carl for the death of him mom and some others due to his lack of being able to react to decisions in the correct manor in Carl’s eyes. Carl says he couldn’t take the chance and reacted correctly. This could be the wakeup call Rick has needed in order for him to begin his correct parenting again and to look after his young boy.

Rick and Michonne, accompanied by Daryl and his signature motorcycle, pull up to the slaughter and neutralise the remaining Walkers that have turned in the after math of the slaughter. They find one survivor and thus are informed of the brutal turn in the Gov’s mood.

But there is trouble elsewhere as Andrea is still trapped and Milton is now deceased, about to turn any second. I was sad to see Milton depart and I think he could have been a valuable member to Rick’s group. But his attributes are too similar to Hershall in my opinion apart from his medical attributes. Andre is clawing at the pliers with her feet and is just able to get them up to her hands Milton turns and begins to walk towards her. She releases one strap and before she can release the second we go blind and are out casted behind the big metal door to play with our imaginations as a result of the brutal sounds we hear. Is Andrea okay? Did she escape in time?

Rick soon arrives at Woodbury with the survivor form the onslaught on the road and gains access to Woodbury after a brief firefight and discussion with Tyreese and Sasha. The survivor’s confession is their ticket inside. Rick says that he heard about Andrea heading to the prison and that she never made it. He believes she is where the Gov locked up Maggie and Glen.

They approach the door silently and tension builds up as you can see a flow of blood underneath the door. They open the door and find the deceased Milton and a burning up Andrea lay out on the floor. Andrea escaped but just a little too late. Her fate is sealed, as was Milton’s, when a bite mark is made clear on her neck. For the first time we see Michonne open up her emotions and cry. Her friend says she wants to kill herself why she still can. Michonne replies that she isn’t going anywhere. Her final words were “I tried”, referring to the fact she didn’t want anyone to die. The emotional end to the second episode in a row wasn’t as effective as the first but still very sad to lose another character with use from the beginning. You here the echo of the gunshot rattle through the corridor to tie up another departure of one of the original cast members from season one.

In the final scene we see Rick pull up to the prison with the remaining Woodbury settlers including Tyreese and Sasha. He announces to his son that they are going to live here now as he storms off in a huff. He takes one final look up at the catwalk, where he has been haunted by his dead wife for a very long time now, and sees nothing. Hopefully this means the end to crazy Rick.

Overall it was a great episode but no it didn’t live up to the expectation as a result of the tension building up over the weeks. The events make up a great episode but not in my opinion of a season finale. It felt very anti-climactic, especially for the attack on the Prison which has been the center of the plot for almost eight episodes now.  The loss of Andrea was unexpected and I was convinced we would lose Beth due to her absence from the majority of episode. I was also surprised we didn’t lose one of Rick’s friends at the prison during the attack.

You could argue that this was going to happen and as soon as these amateur solders, (as the Gov sees them), witness gunfire that they would retreat. I think though this should have been explored earlier leaving the final war, we was almost was promised from the build-up, to unfold in front of us.

I was hoping for a new challenge next season as well, this isn’t yet clear but we could have another battle with the Gov when we return. I would like to see Rick and his group thrown out of the safety of the prison as well when we return and back to traveling around again. I would love to see a season set in the city, I know this isn’t very convenient due to the higher expense this will create but I would love to sacrifice the number of episodes for a different setting. A motive I can’t yet think of would obviously be needed in order to enter the heavily infested city’s though. We could perhaps see a break from the Gov, which I think will be best. By his absence from a season we can witness a new challenge and also give time for the Gov to regroup and rearm with a proper army of troops and not just a group of everyday citizens. 8.5/10
