Bromsgrove Sporting’s
promotion hopes were given another blow on Saturday after losing 4-0 to fourth
place side Nuneaton Griff.
The Rouslers started in the worst way possible when they
conceded a free kick just outside the far corner of the box. Nuneaton’s number
10 Josh Ruff stepped up and curled a low free kick around the wall into the
goalkeepers near bottom corner of the goal to give the away side an early lead.
Bromsgrove could have quickly responded thanks to a low hit Jon
Rogers cross, though a stretching Chris Morrison was unable to make contact
with the ball.
Nuneaton Griff then managed to extend their lead 26 minutes
into the first half. Bromsgrove’s defence allowed Nuneaton striker Josh Ruff
too much space inside the box. The ball was delivered in from the far touch
line and Ruff struck the ball on the half volley into the top left hand corner
of the goal to get his second of the match.
Josh Ruff got his hat-trick and Nuneaton’s third within the
half an hour mark. He struck the ball cleanly outside the box and the ball
powered along the ground into the goalkeeper’s bottom right corner of the goal.
Nuneaton continued to pile on the pressure in the first half
with other chances coming from Steve Barrett, Josh Ruff and Kyle Baxter.
Bromsgrove managed to wade off Nuneaton’s remaining chances but ended the first
half 3-0 down.
Both sides had early chances in the opening stages of the
second half. Substitute Chris Conway tried to close the deficit with a few
efforts for the Rouslers, his best coming inches wide of the Nuneaton post.
Nuneaton’s Mark Williams had an excellent chance to extend
the away sides lead early into the second half. His burst of pace allowed him
to sprint down the near side of the pitch into the Bromsgrove box. He chose to
shoot at a very impossible angle and if he had squared the ball to an unmarked
Nuneaton player then the visitors would surely have been 4-0 up.
Bromsgrove Sporting only really made one more effort in the
remainder of the second half. Joe
Brookes attempted to give his side a life line with an acrobatic overhead kick
inside the box, but his attempt failed to have the required power to beat the
Nuneaton goalkeeper.
Jamie Greenway settled all three points in the 73rd
minute for the away side. His fake shot inside the box beat the last Bromsgrove
defender and gave the player enough room to strike the ball straight though the
Bromsgrove goalkeepers legs.
Tom Savage managed to deny Nuneaton a fifth in the final
stages of the game but it was Nuneaton who was victorious and took all three
points with this 4-0 win.
Bromsgrove’s promotion hopes have taken a severe blow with
only one point from the last three games. The Rouslers will need to get back to
winning ways next Saturday when they play away against 14th place
Pelsall Villa.
