Questions

Q: Who was your biggest influence on the football pitch?

A: Definitely Robbie Fowler. I tried to emulate him to the point of learning to kick with my left foot. I loved watching all strikers like the fat Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard too. I was lucky to be taught striker things off legends like Gary Shaw too while I was at the academy.

Q: What was it that attracted you to Bromsgrove Sporting and what did you know about them before you joined?

A: I always knew about Rovers and the history of the club finishing second in the conference in the early 90's and how good the fans were. I knew the type of project Keith was building at Sporting and when I was available I had a lot of clubs to choose from but I knew speaking to the manager he would have faith in me. I trusted the direction he wanted to take the club and I wanted to be part of it.

Q: What is your biggest highlight on the pitch?

A: On the pitch just getting called up for Ireland, albeit at schoolboy level was unbelievable. Goal wise, as a Liverpool fan I scored a hat trick v Everton which was amazing. I scored a Beckham style half way line goal v Man Utd which was one of the best of my career and on tour in France I netted twice v PSG. My debut hat trick for Sporting is up there too.

Q: What was your biggest challenge?

A: Probably proving things to doubters that I was fit enough and good enough after some serious injuries in my late teens. When you are out for 6 months, having operations and doing physio, then the aim is to come back quicker, stronger and better than before. Each time I have done that it’s been a challenge. Proving that you are not a selfish person is also a challenge, but the people who play with me know I am determined and passionate for the team and would much rather the team won things, as opposed to personal awards.

Q: What are your strengths as a player?

A: I like to think I win a lot of headers for someone who is relatively average height, but I think my best attribute is my finishing. When I am confident and I walk out onto the pitch I get into the mind-set that I know I am going to score. I'm also quicker and stronger than some people give me credit for and I’m pretty creative. I enjoy spreading 60 yard cross field passes.

Q: What areas of your game do you feel you need to work on?

A: On the pitch and off it I’m always trying to work on things. I’ve learned to channel my aggression quite well as I used to suffer badly with bookings. I need to work on my decision making in the last third and probably a bit on helping my team mates close down more and working hard for the team, not just myself.

Q: If you had the chance to play alongside one player, who would it be and why?

A: I went to school with Gabby Agbonlahor and came through the ranks with him and Danny Sturridge and always scored as many as they did, if not more some seasons, so I’d like the chance to play in the Premier League alongside them to see if I could score goals at the very highest level, like I did back then. Bar that it’ll be Steven Gerrard, because he would never stop finding me in the box like he did Owen and Torres. Most of their goals were down to Gerrard's vision.

Q: What is it like playing under managers Keith and Graham?

A: They are both people I look up to and respect immensely. Keith showed faith in me, treats me like a friend and even came to my engagement party. He is a really nice bloke, but very professional when it comes to football and a born winner. But he gives me confidence to do what I want and just score goals, which is good.

Q: What is your favourite thing to do other than playing football?

A: I enjoy keeping fit. If I didn't choose to play football I would have been a boxer, so still train to do that. I enjoy spending time with my fiancĂ©e, watching films and playing other sports like tennis and golf. I also like music and enjoy going to gigs and festivals. I also like creating my own music and going out with friends.

Q: How does it feel having your own dedicated song at Sporting and does it affect your game in anyway once you hear it being chanted?

A: I absolutely love it! I love the feeling of fans tweeting me that they will be there pre match and then when they sing it is like a twelfth man effect. I try to interact with all the fans as much as I can and repay their kindness with goals. They really are the best fans in non-league.
